How to set up permissions for Microsoft 365

Q: How to set up permissions for Microsoft 365

A: Speaking Email will appear in the Azure portal, allowing you to see what permissions it is using. If you mail is not coming through, you can check to make sure these permissions are available.

If your Microsoft 365 / Office 365 is under default settings, you shouldn't need to worry about this. In some cases you will need to manually check and grant this permission.

If it has been locked down your IT team may need to locate the app Speaking Email in the Azure portal and grant the following permission:

- "Access mailboxes as the signed-in user via Exchange Web Services" (EWS.AccessAsUser.All or scope GUID 3b5f3d61-589b-4a3c-a359-5dd4b5ee5bd5)

This is the only permission needed and it enables connections via MS Graph or ActiveSync, not only EWS. (Note that Speaking Email requires Exchange Web Services be enabled even though it uses MS Graph and does not actually use EWS)

The screenshots below show you where to do this. First locate Speaking Email in the Azure Marketplace catalog. There are two versions, for standard M365 and for Microsoft Entra Intune.

Standard M365

M365 with Microsoft Entra Intune MDM

Add it to your app registrations in the azure portal (note screenshots are old, showing 'Speaking Email Azure' but it should be one of the versions above).
